“American Idol” began its final season last week, and Kelly Clarkson’s emotional song “Piece by Piece” brought many, including the judges, to tears.

Clarkson stated that she wrote the song about her experiences and feelings regarding her father, who left her family when she when she was a child. This, along with her raw performance, left everyone watching in awe.

“I begged you to want me but you didn’t want to,” she sang. “And all of your words, they fall flat. I made something of myself and now you wanna come back. But your love, isn’t free, it has to be earned. Back then I didn’t have anything you needed, so I was worthless.”

Host Ryan Seacrest, along with judges Jennifer Lozez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban praised her performance, while the audience chanted “Kelly, Kelly, Kelly!”

“You have us all in tears,” Seacrest said. “The emotion that you exude always, but especially in that important song, it’s just incredible.”

Clarkson wrote the song while she was pregnant with her little girl, River Rose, and that makes the lyrics so much more powerful. The hope she has for her present and future family is inspiring.

“It’s a positive song, even though I know it sounds sad. I don’t know what my father went through as a child, and I don’t know why he left and made the decision he made, but everyone’s human… He’s made me want to be that much more present in my family,” Clarkson explained to Glamour Magazine.

When interviewed on “Ellen,” Clarkson shared some of her thoughts on her Idol performance. “I came off almost in tears for a different reason, because I was so embarrassed. I was like, Oh God, this is my final thing on ‘Idol’ and I could not hold it together.”

The fact that she is now pregnant with a little boy did not help curb her emotions. “… my little boy was turning circles in my stomach. It was nostalgic. It was the last time I was gonna be on ‘Idol’ and it’s ending. I was screwed from the get-go.”

Clarkson performed “Piece by Piece” again on “Ellen.” Both performances were to introduce a new version of the song, which features a piano as the only instrument. This version is now available on iTunes.
