Starting off the year with an unexpected two-week break isn’t all that the 2017-2018 school year has to offer. A new coach is at Lake this year and is a familiar face for some students.

“Coach Prince coached me for summer league when I was 14,” said Stefan Rados. “She’s very keen on getting her swimmers to be the best they can, but of course, has to push them slightly beyond their limits. But it’s this slight push that makes her a good coach, because she only asks for a bit more every practice.”

Coach prince isn’t only good at just coaching, she also swam for Lake and came back to coach some of her students that she had when they were younger.

The new coach Melissa Prince coached for former Lake Water Polo player Stefan Rados and his younger brother current Lake Water Polo player, Filip Rados. Prince is a returning coach who retired six years ago and swam for Lake in the class of ’93.

“I played water polo for Lake and I swam for a full scholarship to Sam Houston,” said Prince. “This is my first coaching for high school and nationally I’ve been coaching for eight years.”

Her swimming background made her want to coach swim and she said that she’s glad to be back to see some of her students now that they’ve grown up a bit. Prince pushes for team unity, even if diving and water polo are an individual-type sport.

“They suffer together and they get excited together,” said Prince. “The one thing that I fear the most is letting them down. I want them to be the best so that they can be and I feel that I have the tools to do that and I hope that they take that and go with it.”

Their next water polo meet is at Clear Brook and Springs on February 23-25.
