Despite earning largely positive critical reviews, including 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has also received plenty of hate from viewers. In addition, The Last Jedi, has become the eighth episode in the Star Wars saga on December 15, 2017, grossing 67.5% less on its second weekend than in its opening weekend.

“I saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi during Christmas break,” sophomore Katelyn Roberts said. “I’ve only seen it once so far.”

Many “fans” only needed one viewing of the movie to make their verdict, but many critics from news sites such as The Daily Wire chose to see it in theaters several times in order to fully develop their own perception of the film.

“All of my friends really enjoyed the movie,” Roberts said. “I really liked it too and I agreed with them that it was a really fun and good movie.”

Despite not making as much money as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s likely that expectations for The Last Jedi were set too high. For one, sequels rarely do as well as their original movies in terms of box office records. In addition, Force Awakens had an entire preceding decade without a real Star Wars movie, Last Jedi was released a mere year after the standalone film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which ranked lower than both of the other new movies in the box office.

“I would rate the movie ten out of ten,” Roberts said. “My favorite part was the ending and the final battle. I didn’t have a least favorite part.”

One opinion of The Last Jedi is that it is a metaphor for Disney’s plans for Star Wars. During the movie, antagonist Kylo Ren asks main protagonist Rey to join him and “let the past die.” Disney appears intent on killing off classic characters from the original trilogy, such as Han Solo in The Force Awakens. Critics have suggested that Disney wants to let the past of Star Wars die and reinvent the series in its own image. Little hints of this have already popped up in The Last Jedi, such as the more flippant and modern wisecracks, which infuriates many longtime fans.

Regardless of the opinions of critics and fans alike, The Last Jedi is certainly a turning point in the Star Wars franchise, for better or worse.
