ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) is an Islamic terrorist group threatening the lives of innocent people in the Middle East. ISIS, formerly part of al-Qaeda, was founded in the garage of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, an ambitious jihadist and college dropout. He sends his followers out into Iraq and Syria to capture guiltless people into slavery, and torture them until they agree to convert. Zeinat was one of these slaves who didn’t know that she was a slave of the ISIS leader until she escaped.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi took Zarqawi’s position after his death in 2006 and is now leading the terrorist group.

Baghdadi played soccer in his youth. His former teammates shared that he was always intense and would get overly angry if he didn’t win the game. When he was of age, he tried to get into the army but was denied because he was near-sighted. He then focused his work on Islamic studies.

Zeinat began working as a fifteen-year-old as a handpicked slave of Baghdadi’s. It wasn’t until after she escaped the terrors of slavery that she recognized Baghdadi on television, giving a speech to his followers.

“He was always evil,” said Zeinat. “He murdered people. He forced people to convert. He raped girls. He killed families, separating mothers from their children. I want the world to know how evil he is.”

Zeinat recalls being shown the video of the beheading of American journalist James Foley, “‘You have two choices,’ he would say. ‘Convert to Islam or die like this,’” said Zeinat. Men of ISIS would beat her and other slaves until they were bruised and blackened and had dislocated arms.

Zeinat was very lucky to escape ISIS. She had tried once before but was caught, beaten, and placed in jail. While in jail, she befriended Kayla Mueller, a white slave.

“After that, we stayed together and became like sisters,” said Zeinat.

Once they had been relieved of their sentence in jail, Zeinat proposed an escape plan to Kayla, who had just been forcefully married to Baghdadi. Mueller was too afraid to escape.

“The first time I told her I would escape she said ‘Don’t run away. If they catch you, they will surely kill you.’” said Zeinat.

At one in the morning the next day, Zeinat climbed through her window and ran for 3 hours. She finally came upon a family that motor biked her to her family. Zeinat finally escaped.

No one can completely confirm that what Zeinat claimed is true, but she has a very convincing alibi. She has uncovered information about Baghdadi no one else could, such as the fact that he was afraid to use phones in fear of being tracked.

Zeinat is one of thousands of captured slaves and is one of the few to be alive. Kayla still remains in the hands of ISIS.
