Deaf Culture Club is a club devoted to “getting the hearing world involved with Deaf culture and spreading Deaf Awareness,” says ASL teacher and founder of the Deaf Culture Club, Rachel Cook.

If you’re interested in joining the Deaf Culture Club, they meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 2:45 in room N120. Anyone in school can participate; you don’t have to be enrolled in an ASL class. Deaf socials are held monthly, where you can go and hang out with the deaf and hard of hearing.

Ms. Cook began ASL in high school when she was forced into it for being dyslexic. “They thought ASL [would be] easy and threw me in there,” she said. “It isn’t easy for everyone, but it was easy for me.” Ms. Cook is very passionate about ASL due to her experience with the language. “I loved being able to express myself without fear of spelling or English grammatical errors,” she explained.

Ms. Cook graduated in the top three percent of her class at Lamar University, even when she was told that she wouldn’t be successful in college because of her severe dyslexia. “ASL really changed my life and made me understand everyday conversations a lot better,” she said.
